In the novel “1984”, the Ministry of Truth is in charge of lies.  See, there’s a problem with public announcements, predictions etc…sometimes they are wrong.  Now, it’s not such a big deal if you are wrong about your NCAA basketball bracket.  What if you are wrong about something major though?  It wouldn’t look very good to say you are against war with Eastasia or Iraq and then have someone pop up with a record of you voting to go to war with that very same country!  The Ministry of Truth takes care of problems like that by eliminating all proof of your actual vote and even changing it retroactively to better suit your current views.  With the Ministry of Truth around, you don’t need to come up with silly stories like “I thought I was voting to put inspectors back in place.”  This is just an example though, I am sure something like this would never happen to the wife of a former President who was running for President herself.

            The problem for Nancy Pelosi, and other Democrats, is the Ministry of Truth doesn’t exist…yet.  They are working on it.  There are currently American school kids being taught that Pearl Harbor was Japan’s attempt to defend their culture.  In one possible 2084, the Al Gore institute of Science and Technology publishes the history books for American schools.  In these books 9-11 was America’s fault.  This was actually pre-emptive self defense by the peace loving Muslim community.  Everything was fine under Bill Clinton, who demonstrated his loyalty by repeatedly not killing Osama Bin Laden.  The Muslim community knew, however, that George W. Bush would attempt to wipe them out if they continued to peacefully kill innocent people.  They had to strike first.  As predicted, George W. Bush attacked them.  You can see why they had to defend themselves.

            For now though, total control has not been achieved.  There is no one to simply change records to better suit current circumstances.  For now, when Bill Clinton says “I did not have sexual relations with that woman!” he still risks the stained dress showing up.  When Nancy Pelosi declares water-boarding to be torture, she risks having someone produce records of briefings.  Then, Nancy Pelosi has to say she wasn’t at those briefings.  Then someone produces a record of who attended, Damn!  Nancy Pelosi wasn’t told that these methods actually would be used.  There’s a record that says she was?  Well, now she has to call the CIA liars and roll the dice.  Nancy Pelosi says she wants a truth commission, I’m thinking she should hold off a bit.  At least until the Ministry of Truth can clean a few things up for her.
