Sarah Palin portrayed as sexy and stupid
Newsweek continues in the effort by the left to eliminate Sarah Palin as a future threat by destroying her now. Newsweek has Sarah Palin on the cover describing her as “a problem” and “bad news for the GOP and everyone else”. This is next to a cover photo of her that was originally taken for Runner’s World. This has led to probably the most publicity an issue of Newsweek has had in decades.
The photo by itself isn’t sexist. Sarah posed for it and she looks great in it. The problem is the context. Let’s compare a few Newsweek covers:
Hillary Clinton has cover stories titled, “I found my own voice” and, “Hear her roar!” Those sound like stories of a powerful, enlightened woman. Her cover shots show a woman with a very professional hairstyle, professional suit and looking to the future. Nothing sexual, or even very feminine, about these covers. Hillary Clinton is a woman to be taken seriously. She’s practically portrayed as a man to be taken seriously. Now let’s look at a couple of Newsweek covers featuring Sarah Palin:
Sarah Palin is shown in some work clothes carrying a gun and then in a bit of a “cheesecake” picture showing off her legs. So Hillary Clinton is a professional who needs to be heard, Sarah Palin is a gun slinging redneck and, as the Other McCain puts it, a “cheesecake bimbo”. The portrayal of Sarah Palin as a sex object continues later in the magazine with a picture of a Sarah Palin sexy school girl doll.
Calling this portrayal of Sarah Palin sexist is somewhat inaccurate in my opinion. This has less to do with her gender than it does with her political beliefs. However, the left exposes their own prejudice in their methods of attack. It is actually the left who believes a woman can’t be taken seriously if she is also sexually attractive. They assume no one wants to vote for a woman wearing work clothes and packing a gun or who can pull of a sexy pose in running shorts. If a woman is to be taken seriously, she should look and dress and behave…like a man.
In other words, the left thinks Sarah should be home working around the house, hunting dinner and having sex. Sarah Palin is far too country and uncultured to run the country. This is not because she is a woman, it is because she is a conservative woman. George W. Bush was portrayed as a dumb Texas hick. The TEA Partiers are redneck racists. This is just another version of the left’s most basic prejudice, anyone who disagrees with them obviously does so out of ignorance and stupidity. This is why the government has to be more involved in the lives of citizens, because most citizens are too stupid to run their own lives.
Hillary Clinton is portrayed very professionally, certainly Presidential, aristocratic even. Sarah Palin is shown, on one cover, looking very much like a “common housewife”. On the other cover, she looks like a wife doing a sexy pose for her husband. The left again exposes their contempt for the “common man” they claim to champion. They attack the very qualities people like about Sarah Palin. People are inspired by Sarah Palin because she is not a politician from D.C.. She doesn’t come from a rich family. She has failed a few times and made some mistakes but continues to try to do what she believes to be right. Sarah Palin can’t be portrayed as an intelligent professional who may have views you disagree with, similar to Hillary Clinton. Sarah Palin is obviously an ignorant hick who should be left to hunting and sex.
Update: In an effort to spin the popularity of Sarah Palin’s book, the Democratic National Committee has been sending memos to the press spelling out how the DNC feels about Sarah Palin and how the press should interpret her book, Going Rogue, and her popularity.
